Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum office attacked in Manipur

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) office in Churachandpur was subjected to vandalism on Sunday night. Unidentified individuals destroyed documents, computers, and furniture in what is believed to be an escalation of an internal conflict between the Paitei and Zomi communities.

Reports claim that the attack destroyed several documents, computers, and furniture. Allegedly, the internal conflict between the Paitei and Zomi communities caused the attack, according to media reports. The story is developing and we are awaiting more details.

In a separate incident, two houses in Kwatha Khunou, a Meitei village near the India-Myanmar border, were torched by unknown assailants. The village, under Moreh police station’s jurisdiction in the Tengnoupal district, is home to nearly 40 residents across 15 houses.

Following ethnic violence last May, villagers fled Kwatha Khunou fearing further attacks. Village Chairman Ningthoujam Manihar reported that many sought refuge in Kwatha Khunjao, guarded by Central forces, while others relocated to Imphal for safety.

The Army, which usually patrols the area, may not have been present during the recent incidents, according to Manihar.

Security forces from Moreh town inspected the site, finding two damaged kutcha houses but no villagers. Superintendent of Police, Special Commando, Th Krishnatombi Singh, noted that other structures, including a new government health center, were unharmed.

The government is considering establishing a security post in Kwatha Khunou to facilitate the safe return of the displaced villagers, as per the latest updates from the police department.

Superintendent of Police, Special Commando, Th Krishnatombi Singh stated: “During our visit, we couldn't find any villagers in Kwatha Khunou, an abandoned village. We observed the remains of two kutcha houses (houses constructed from mud and straw), but couldn't immediately determine who set the houses on fire. We also found a newly erected government health centre building and other structures in undamaged condition."
