Srinagar, 10 July: With a significant improvement in the weather conditions in Kashmir on Sunday, the officials said that the looming flood threat has subsided and have forecast an Overall Improvement” in the weather from today in J&K.
According to the MeT officials here on Sunday in Kashmir, the weather has improved significantly in both Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting mainly dry weather from 11-15 June.
Sharing the precipitation details in the last 24 hours till 0830 hours on Sunday, the officials said that Srinagar received rainfall of 1 mm, Qazigund 31.8mm, Pahalgam 17.4mm, Kupwara 0.0mm, Kokernag 34.0mm, Gulmarg 3.0mm, Jammu 14.2mm, Banihal 28.2mm, Batote 58.8mm, Katra 19.2mm, Bhaderwah 125.1mm and Kathua recorded as high as 221.8 mm of rainfall.
The weather official said that the minimum temperature for Srinagar today recorded a low of 14.9°C, the same as on the previous night, which was 2.8°C below normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, the official said, recorded a low of 14.0°C against 14.6°C on the previous night and was 2.1°C below normal for the gateway town of the Kashmir Valley.
The official said that the world-famous tourist resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, recorded a low of 9.6°C against 10.8°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 2.2°.
In the frontier district Kupwara, the officials said that the mercury settled at 14.8°C against 13.2°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 1.3°C for the north Kashmir area.
Kokernag recorded a low of 13.1°C against 13.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.6°C below normal for the place, the officials said.
The official added that the world-famous ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded a low of 8.5°C against 7.8°C on the previous night and it was 3.3°C below normal.
The weather official said that for J&K’s winter capital Jammu temperature recorded a low of 20.9°C against 24.6°C on the previous night and it was 4.8°C below normal, while the Banihal recorded a low of 14.6°C, Batote 13.5.7°C, Katra 18.4.2°C and Bhaderwah 14.1°C.
Meanwhile, several high-altitude areas of Ladakh, including Rangdum also witnessed unseasonal snowfall, while towns received rainfall.
Sajjad Kargili a political activist on his Twitter handle had posted a video of snowfall in the Rangdum area in Kargil, saying that it was unbelievable to see snowfall in the middle of July.
The official told Ground Report that the high-altitude passes in both Leh and Kargil districts experienced unseasonal snowfall and that the Rangdum village in Kargil witnessed nearly three inches of snowfall, while other areas, including Pensi la, Zanskar, Nubra Khardungla and the hills surrounding Kargil, were also covered by a snow blanket.
"There has been moderate to heavy rain and light snowfall over the higher reaches of Ladakh. En route to the holy Amarnath cave in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district in Pahalgam, light snowfall was witnessed for a brief time", the official said.
