Fact check: Did Kashmir celebrations after Pakistan defeats India in Asia Cup 2022?

Following India's five-wicket loss to Pakistan in the first Asian Cup Super 4 match in Dubai on Sunday, some videos were tweeted on social media, with claims celebrating Pakistan's victory in Srinagar.

Srinagar police immediately dismissed these claims, saying the videos are fake. Srinagar Police have responded by expressing a strong objection to a tweet by Sagar Kumar of Sudarshan News. However, Sagar Kumar later deleted the tweet. Sagar Kumar wrote in his tweet: "Fireworks in Srinagar for Pakistan's victory." This tweet was also accompanied by a video of fireworks.

Retweeting the same video, Srinagar Police wrote: "Don't spread sensationalism and fake news through old videos. No such incident has happened in Srinagar. This video is from Nawakadal Chowk who is five years old. Fake videos are being shared and old. from many twitter accounts, including verified ones. If you live in Srinagar, you will know how quiet the atmosphere is today after the match. Again, I ask you not to spread fake news.

In another following tweet, they write, "There are many fake/ old videos being shared on twitter by many handles including verified ones for sensationalism. If you live in Srinagar you will know how peaceful and calm post-match atmosphere is today. It is again requested to all not to circulate such fake & old videos. "

On October 24 last year, three Kashmiri students were arrested in Agra for celebrating India's defeat by Pakistan. After his arrest, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself tweeted, saying, "Those who celebrate Pakistan's victory will face sedition."

The arrested students were students from the Raja Balwant Singh (RBS) College of Engineering in Agra. In June 2017, 20 Muslims were arrested for celebrating Pakistan's victory against India in the Cricket Champions Trophy. This case was from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. A case of sedition was registered against them. However, later this case had to be withdrawn from 15 people from Madhya Pradesh.

In June 2017, after Pakistan beat India in the ICC Champions Trophy, people in Kashmir set off firecrackers and celebrated Pakistan's victory over India. Some news reports related to those celebrations can be seen here and here. Although we were unable to determine the exact date the video was recorded, it can be confirmed that the video shared on the post is old and does not show any recent celebrations after Pakistan won against India in the Asian Cup 2022.
