Biggest issues in UP elections this time

Ground Report | New Delhi: Biggest issues in UP elections; In the assembly elections, BJP is focusing the most on nationalism apart from the issues of that state. From UP to Uttarakhand and Punjab, BJP leaders are mentioning in every meeting that only BJP can keep the country safe.

BJP is trying to tell the people that this assembly election is not just about choosing the government in the state but the election of the country. Even in the states where there is a BJP government, the BJP is counting the work of the Modi government at the centre more than the work done in those states.

In an election marked by communal rhetoric when the BJP raised the pitch over the Muzaffarnagar riots and the alleged exodus of Hindus from Kairana, the average victory margin for the BJP in most seats it won was over 40,000. Polling is to be held in both Muzaffarnagar and Kairana in this phase.

Biggest issues in UP elections

Dalit politics at the crossroads: Till a few years ago, Dalit politics was at the crossroads in the stronghold of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The BJP has made significant inroads among Dalits in Uttar Pradesh at the expense of the BSP. The results of these assembly elections may give some indication as to how Dalit politics will develop from here. Both BJP and Congress are trying to increase their acceptability among Dalits.

Hindutva has been a core issue for the BJP for several decades but it is most visible in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. Issues like Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor, construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, lighting of 1 lakh diyas (earthen pots) on Diwali in Ayodhya, (re-conversion of those converting to other religions), a ban on triple talaq among Muslims Divorce, and protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) served to strengthen Hindutva politics in Uttar Pradesh during Yogi Adityanath's tenure.

Law and order: The Yogi Adityanath government has launched several campaigns to improve the deteriorating law and order image in Uttar Pradesh. After taking over as chief minister, Yogi Adityanath in 2017 announced that criminals should either reform their own ways or leave Uttar Pradesh.

Farmers’ protest: Several groups of farmers are protesting against the three Agriculture Acts passed by the Parliament in September 2020. The government is touting three agriculture laws as major reforms in the agriculture sector that would remove middlemen and allow farmers to sell anywhere in the country.

COVID-19 pandemic: As discussed earlier, opposition parties, especially Congress, seem to be cornering the government over the issue of COVID-19 mismanagement. According to the data of the Union Health Ministry, more than 17 lakh people have been infected with the novel coronavirus and over 22,000 have died.
