Ayurveda in Pandemic: The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been unusual and unprecedented in numerous ways, and it has posed a challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. The coronavirus pandemic has got global attention on the importance of a strong immune system, the body’s defence power against disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and other creatures that we touch, consume, and breath on a daily basis. Along with SARS-CoV-2 virology, understanding the fundamental physiological and immunological mechanisms driving COVID-19 clinical manifestations is critical for the discovery and rational design of viable treatments. Until a possible vaccine is available, our immune systems will have to adjust on their own to COVID-19.

We are all aware that prevention is any day preferable to treatment. While there is no permanent treatment for the same, it is, therefore, prudent to adopt preventative steps that improve our immunity in these difficult times.

Ayurveda’s vast knowledge base on preventive care stems from the principles of “Dinacharya”-daily regimens, “Ritucharya”-seasonal regimens to live a healthy life and the Panchakarma treatment. It is a science that is based on plants. The simplicity of self-awareness and the harmony that each individual may achieve by boosting and maintaining immunity is emphasized through the traditional teachings of Ayurveda. Individuals can avail of the Panchakarma treatment in Bhopal, as a variety of private hospitals there offer the same.

Over the last year, over 3000+ people went to ayurvedic clinics or opted for ayurvedic therapy/treatment as means of recovery post contracting covid-19 or simply as preventive measures and for boosting their immunity.

Furthermore, in his speech to the country, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi suggested the use of ayurvedic remedies to boost protection against the covid-19 pandemic. This has resulted in an increase in the demand for ayurvedic medications.
  1. Traditional practices of Ayurveda are also beneficial in terms of increasing psychological well-being as well as lowering the risk of infection. Ayurveda has considerable capabilities and potential which are used both for covid-19 prevention as well as an additional therapy approach. Several Indian states have also begun to use Ayurvedic treatments as a form of a covid-19 prevention strategy, Kerala being one of them. India has the people as well as the service delivery resources to undertake a substantial scale covid-19 remediation strategy based on the preventive use of ayurvedic medications as well as the deployment of Ayurveda Human Resources and Services for asymptomatic patients. The country has over 2000 ayurvedic hospitals and over 15,000 ayurvedic clinics, as well as over 4 lakh, registered ayurvedic practitioners which makes this proposition viable.
  1. The classic Ayurveda literature Charaka Samhita discusses epidemic management and highlights immunity as a way to curb and stop illness progression in order to preserve homeostasis. Ayurveda places greater focus on developing mental and physical fortitude to deal with a variety of stresses including infection which is quite common during an ongoing pandemic.
  1. Individuals are susceptible to so many viruses and germs in their everyday lives that they are unaware of, but the key to staying safe from them is to have a strong and vigilant immune system.
