AFC Women Asian cup: Huge moment for football in India

Ground Report | New Delhi: AFC Women Asian cup; AFC women’s Asia cup commenced on 20 January 2022 and is scheduled till 06 February 2022 with India being the Host Country. It is such a proud moment for the country to host the women's football championship. Hosting the Asian Cup is an honour as it depicts India’s strong position in promoting Women in Sports and will also spread awareness about the same as it will further encourage more women to participate in Sports.

The 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup is the 20th edition of the quadrennial international football tournament in Asia. The tournament expanded to 12 countries namely Japan, China, Iran, Taipei, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, Myanmar along with the host country India. 3 venues have been decided across Maharashtra. India kick-started the tournament with Iran on January 20, 2022, at D.Y Patil Stadium.

Recently, Asian Football Confederation, announced that the Indian Women’s football team has withdrawn their participation from the Asian Cup due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in the Indian camp.  All India Football Federation’s president Praful Patel on Sunday tweeted and expressed his concern regarding the sudden outbreak among the women football team.

Covid Outbreak

This outbreak happened even after taking all the precautionary measures.  The entire nation is depressed after the news as it was an honourable moment for the Indian Women’s Football Team to showcase their skills. However, it is more important to take care and not compromise with the player’s health and wellbeing.

The Indian Team has officially withdrawn from the cup according to Article 4.1 of the Special Rules Applicable to AFC competition in accordance with COVID-19 and all the matches of India stand null and void according to Article 6.5.5 of the Competition Regulations.

India was assigned to Group A along with the teams of China PR, Chinese Taipei and Iran but however only these three teams will be participating in the competition from the group. India was scheduled to play against Taipei today but due to the failure of incorporating a minimum of 13 players for the match, they had to withdraw.

Though this is a matter of serious concern and the restrictions cannot be eased, all we can hope is for our blue tigresses to come back healthy and strong for the other competitions and make India proud, The Nation is proud of them for standing strong till now and we believe that our Blue Tigresses will soon be back with the rawr.
