A tragic mass shooting occurred during an unauthorized takeover of a street in Willowbrook, Illinois a location near Chicago. At night there was a shooting that left at least 20 injured and the loss of one life, according to the Police.

Witnesses at the scene describe the incident as a June 16 celebration that tragically turned deadly. The shooting took place in a parking lot located in Willowbrook, nearly 21 miles west of Chicago, at around 12:30 a.m. The area was full of people who had gathered to commemorate Juneteenth.

Willowbrook mass shootings

DuPage County Deputy Sheriff Eric Swanson told reporters that some of the injured people were transported to hospitals by ambulance, while others arrived on foot.

A total of 12 ambulances responded to the scene, according to Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander of the Tri-State Fire Protection District. Two people were reported to be in critical condition. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear and is an ongoing investigation, as confirmed by Deputy Sheriff Swanson.

Tragic shooting leaves multiple victims

Chief Myron Johnson of the Sheriff's Department County Services Division provided details about the age range of the victims, which ranged from 16 to 24 years old. As reported by CNN, Chief Johnson stated that the victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds throughout the body, including injuries to the head, back, and upper and lower body.

Deputies on the scene determined that five victims had been shot, and were told by a witness that two other victims had already been taken to a hospital before authorities arrived, according to Johnson. Shortly after responding to the initial incident, officers discovered a car wreck a quarter mile from the site of the mass shooting.

There have been more than 305 mass shootings in the US so far this year as of Sunday morning, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more victims are injured or killed.

The high number of mass shootings in the US has led many in the country to call for substantial federal gun control measures, even though Congress has been unable to enact such legislation.
