Who is Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Singapore's New Indian-Origin President

Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a former deputy prime minister of Singapore, was elected as the country's president in a recent vote. This position is mostly ceremonial, and it's the first time in over ten years that people had a choice in the election.

Tharman, who is 66 years old and an economist, won with 70.4 percent of the votes. He takes over from the previous president, Halimah Yacob, who didn't face any competition in the last election in 2017.

Tharman mentioned that his election shows people's confidence in Singapore's future and their optimism about progress.

The president's role has some important responsibilities, like overseeing the country's finances and having a say in certain decisions. It's also the president's job to approve investigations into corruption.

Many people think that Tharman's victory is good for the People's Action Party (PAP), the party that has been in power in Singapore since 1959. The PAP has had some problems recently, so this win gives them a boost.
