Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is Bhupendra Patel; The Bharatiya Janata Party elected Bhupendra Patel as the next Chief Minister of Gujarat. The BJP core committee meeting that concluded at Kamalam concluded with Patel being named as the new CM.

Bhupendra Patel’s name was taken at a meeting of state BJP legislators on Sunday afternoon in the presence of central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Joshi and party general secretary Tarun Chugh.

Who is bhupendra Patel

An MLA of Ghatlodiya Vidhan Sabha, Patel has held the positions of Chairman of Memnagar Municipality in Ahmedabad and Chairman of Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority.

Bhupendra Patel won the 2017 Gujarat Assembly election from Ghatlodia constituency by defeating Congress candidate Shashikant Patel.

Patel belongs to the Kadwa sub-caste of the Patidar community. The seat he holds was represented by former Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel before being appointed as the governor.

Bhupendra Patel has been associated with politics for a long time. He has good experience socially and politically. In the year 1999-2000, he was the chairman of the standing committee and the chairman of the Memnagar municipality. During 2010-15, he was a councilor from Thaltej ward.

During 2015-17, he has been the chairman of AUDA i.e. Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority. On the other hand, when it comes to social responsibility, he has been the vice-president of the school board of AMC in 2008-10.

In the last assembly elections, he won for the first time and after about three and a half years he got a chance to lead the state.

Why Rupani removed before polls

Rupani’s resignation did not come suddenly, fifteen months before the assembly elections. Sources said the BJP was considering changing the guard ahead of the elections in Gujarat, especially in view of the criticism of Rupani’s government with regard to the COVID-19 management.

The party’s Gujarat in-charge Bhupendra Yadav and general secretary BL Santosh were conducting review meetings regarding Gujarat for a long time.
