Weather tracker: US records over 385 tornadoes in 2023

So far in 2023, as of April 2, 2023, the United States Weather Service had reported 385 tornadoes. In addition to the material losses in different cities, in which the roof of the Apollo Theater in Belvidere (Illinois) even fell, there have been 32 deaths related to storms and tornadoes.

From the White House they announced aid for the different States, in order to guarantee places to sleep and food for the people who have been affected.

For this week, the number of tornadoes is expected to increase, so the monitoring of local authorities has issued alerts to prevent its population.

For example, in North Dakota and South Dakota, in the north of the country, there are tornado watches for several cities. According to the Weather Service, it could cause damage to mobile homes, people on the street, trees, roofs and windows.

To the south, in some parts of New Mexico and Texas, there are warnings for the speed of the winds and because extreme weather conditions could cause fires.

The hot wind currents that are coming up the coast of the United States could also create risks in other places, such as Kentuchy or Indiana.

Canary Islands experience record heat in March

The Canary Islands, a popular tourist destination located off the coast of northwestern Africa, saw an exceptionally hot end to March, with temperatures soaring above 34C (93F) on Wednesday and Thursday.

The state meteorological agency (AEMET) issued an orange weather warning for temperatures exceeding 37C – the first time this has ever occurred in March. The Tasarte weather station in La Aldea de San Nicolás recorded a temperature of 37.8C on Wednesday, breaking a 72-year-old March temperature record.

However, the new record stood for just one day, as the same site recorded 38.2C on Thursday, marking another historic high temperature.

Even Antarctica, the coldest continent on Earth, is not immune to the effects of climate change. A mini heatwave hit the southern pole last weekend, with temperatures rising above -40C for more than two days and reaching a high of -33C – a staggering 20 degrees above the seasonal average of -53.7C.

Although not breaking the record high for March, this uncharacteristically warm weather is causing concern. Daily highs exceeded -40C once again over the weekend, indicating a persistent trend.
