Water seeping into houses in Mastadi village of Uttarkashi

The Mastadi village, situated just ten kilometers away from the district headquarters of Uttarkashi, is grappling with a mounting crisis as landslides and water seepage into homes show no signs of widespread.

The residents of Mastadi village have taken a determined stance in a bid to secure the safety of their families and children. Men, women, and the older people of the village have embarked on a fast, demanding immediate action to relocate their families to safer grounds.

A precarious electricity pole is looming over four houses, raising concerns of its potential collapse, thus posing a threat that the village is grappling with. The disruption in power supply has only heightened the distress among villagers.

The persistent fear grips villagers that their homes might collapse at any moment due to the prevailing conditions. The uncertainty has cast a shadow of anxiety over the community, compelling them to take action for their safety.

Geologists survey Mastadi village

Geologists recently surveyed disaster-prone Mastadi and Kujjan villages in Uttarkashi district on Friday and Saturday. Officials stated that the district administration will devise protective measures based on the survey report.

Cracks and landslides in Mastadi village originated from the 1991 earthquake. In 1997, geologists surveyed the village, proposing relocation and protection. However, the village is still displaced, and they did not implement even after 26 years the suggested protective measures.

The recent monsoon widened cracks in houses from courtyards to roads. Land subsidence affected houses of Chandramohan, Khimanand, Shiv Narayan, Harish, Ramji, Jayaprakash, Sundar Lal, Sankar, Devi Prasad, Ramanand, Surendra, Baijnath, Mukesh, Balbir, and Jai Singh.
