Three western disturbances bring major weather shifts to India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted major weather changes in northwest India over the next week due to the rapid activation of three western disturbances.

Rain and snow in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh

Heavy rain and snowfall are expected today in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad. These regions may receive rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. This weather pattern is predicted to continue for the next week.

In addition to rain and snowfall, showers accompanied by strong winds and lightning are possible today in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

Light to moderate rain is expected in Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh between January 31 and February 1, 2024, with rainfall ranging from 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm. There is also a chance of hailstorms in some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on January 31 and February 2.

Regarding temperature fluctuations, the minimum temperature in many parts of the country was recorded between 7°C and 10°C yesterday. In some parts of Bihar and different coastal parts of Ganga in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, the minimum temperature remained two to four degrees Celsius below normal. The minimum temperature in Delhi and East Madhya Pradesh was one to three degrees Celsius, much below the normal range.

Temperature Rise and Weather Changes Expected

The IMD has stated that the minimum temperature is likely to increase by two to four degrees Celsius in many parts of northwest and central India over the next four days. Over the next two days, the minimum temperature in many parts of Eastern India may increase by two to three degrees Celsius.

Due to falling temperatures, a cold outbreak is expected in some parts of the country, including some parts of Bihar and different parts of Uttar Pradesh. Yesterday, severe cold was experienced in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana.

According to the IMD, due to rising temperatures and rain, relief from the cold wave is expected in most parts of the country over the next five days. However, dense to very dense fog is expected in different areas of Uttar Pradesh, some parts of Bihar, and different parts of North Rajasthan in the coming two to three days.

Yesterday, isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad witnessed rain or thundershowers between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.
