The Indian subcontinent is experiencing unusual weather patterns this June as districts across the country are seeing irregular and heavy rainfall. Despite the monsoon delay, some regions have already received more than 50 per cent of their seasonal rainfall in a single day, leading to flood-like situations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recorded significant rainfall in a short period of time, causing outages and waterlogging in several areas.
Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh
On June 25, 2023, Bijnor received a staggering 92.6mm of rain between 8am and 10am. This downpour, classified as heavy rain by the IMD, paralyzed the city with heavy flooding and paralysis of daily activities.
Suburbs of Mumbai, Maharashtra
Also on June 25, 2023, suburban Mumbai experienced an extraordinary deluge, with 176.1mm of rain recorded in a few hours. This rain falls under the category of extremely heavy rain according to the IMD, leading to widespread disruption in the city.
Deoghar District, Odisha
On the same day, the Deoghar district of Odisha witnessed 106.3mm of rain, which was a staggering 1419 percent more than the normal average for that day (7mm). Notably, 76 percent of the total rainfall for the month of June in Deoghar occurred in a single day.
Jharsuguda District, Odisha
Similar to Deoghar, Jharsuguda district recorded 97.9mm of rainfall on June 25, 2023, exceeding the normal average of 8.3mm by a remarkable 1079 percent. A significant part of Jharsuguda's rainfall for the month, nearly 60 percent, was received in a single day.
Heavy Continuous Rains
Heavy rains persisted on June 26, affecting additional districts across the country. For example, the Angul district of Odisha experienced 101.1 mm of rainfall in a single day, which constitutes about 50 percent of the total rainfall in the district for the season (260.6 mm).
Kathua District, Jammu and Kashmir
Kathua District received a staggering 107.4mm of rain on June 26, which was a staggering 2,287 percent more than the normal average. This excessive downpour is cause for concern and highlights the seriousness of the weather conditions.
Mahasamund and Raipur Districts, Chhattisgarh
Mahasamund and Raipur districts in Chhattisgarh also witnessed heavy rainfall on June 26, with 90.8mm and 82.1mm respectively. These numbers represent significant deviations from normal averages, underscoring the impact of the ongoing weather event.
