Sarabjeet Kaur Mayor Chandigarh: Ground Report | News Desk| The election for the mayor of Chandigarh took a twist when one vote of the Aam Aadmi Party, which was giving tough competition to BJP, was declared invalid and the Mayor of BJP was declared victorious. In this interesting contest, BJP’s Sarabjeet Kaur defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s Anju Katyal by one vote. Now despite having the maximum number of councilors in Chandigarh, AAP have not been able to get their mayor on the chair. AAP has got 14 seats in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
Both the parties had 14-14 votes, It was a tie. But the twist came at the time of counting of votes. One vote of AAP was declared invalid as both the sides of the ballot paper had tick marks. The Aam Aadmi Party has accused the BJP of making a mess.
The Congress with seven councillors abstained from the voting process, so did lone Akali Dal councillor Hardeep Singh. They all didn’t turn up for voting. Of the 36 votes then (including one of MP Kirron Kher), eight of them abstained from voting and 28 of them voted.
High drama unfolded and Chandigarh Police had to be called in as AAP and BJP councillors literally manhandled each other.
Who is Sarabjeet Kaur?
Sarabjeet Kaur is the wife of former BJP councilor Jagtar Jagga. She made her journey to Mayor’s Post from a housewife. BJP has chosen her for the post of mayor because she is a Jat Sikh face which will benefit the party in Punjab elections.
Sarabjeet was born in 1980 in a Jat Sikh family of Panchkula. She completed her studies from Panchkula itself. She did her further studies from Kurukshetra University. She was married to Jagtar Jagga during the final year of college.
