“Our planet is dying”: Climate activists protest at Federal Reserve Bank

Climate activists blocked access to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday, September 18, 2023. The activists were protesting the use of fossil fuels and called for an end to them. Hundreds of protesters marched to the Wall Street area and blocked access to the New York Federal Reserve.

Protesters take over NYC streets

Climate activists blocked entrances to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday afternoon as part of a string of actions set to take place for Climate Week NYC.

Stop the Money Pipeline, a coalition of 240 eco groups, and protest group Climate Defiance spearheaded the protest outside the Federal Reserve's offices in New York City and ultimately sparked a large police response. Activists linked arms to block the building's doors and called for an end to fossil fuel financing and for government action to end fossil fuel development.

"One protester shouted, 'Regulate the end of fossil fuels! End fossil fuels now! Our planet is dying. Our forests are on fire. We are being flooded. The hurricanes are getting worse – the earthquakes, the tornadoes. The planet is crying out; we need to hear her. "We need international standards to shut this down." Our lives are on the line, our planet, our home is on the line.'"

Other protesters shouting anti-fossil fuels slogans chanted, "Arrest the real criminals – arrest the climate criminals."

"Climate Defiance said in a social media post, 'We accuse Fed Chair Jerome Powell of being a climate criminal and demand bringing him to justice. Today, we stand in the pouring rain, arm-in-arm with dozens of partners, to do so.'"

Climate Group, a nonprofit focused on driving climate action worldwide, hosts an annual event called Climate Week NYC. Several major corporations, including McKinsey & Company, Salesforce, Google, Pepsico, and BMW, sponsor the event, which includes dozens of protests and events aimed at raising awareness about global warming.

Protesters demand climate action now

Protesters marched and chanted slogans like "We want clean air, not more billionaires." They went to the Federal Reserve building and blocked its doors.

The police arrested those who blocked the doors, saying they were causing a disturbance, and warned that they might face more charges if they resisted.

The protesters said that if one person got arrested, many more would join the protest. The police also asked them to leave because they were blocking the way for other people. Eventually, they cleared the doors by 12:30 p.m., but a big crowd continued to gather and chant across the street.

One protester said that the climate crisis is so serious that they need a stronger response, even if it means breaking the rules. "They believe that urgent action is needed and civil disobedience is a way to show the public and those in power."

According to a report, the government gave a lot of money to fossil fuel companies in 2022, which made a record high of $1 trillion. The protesters believe that the Federal Reserve has the power to make changes and regulate this, but they think they have to push them because they haven't been doing it.
