The All-India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) has urged for an immediate revision of the Non-NET research scholar fellowship in both central and state universities across India.
The association argues that delayed revisions have imposed financial burdens on the country’s research scholars due to rising living costs and inflation, hindering their commitment to impactful research and development.
Non-Net Ph.D. Scholars demanding hike in fellowship
In a statement issued to Ground Report, AIRSA said “It’s disheartening to note that Non-NET fellowships have remained unchanged at a mere Rs. 8,000 per month since 2006,” the association said. “This unjust stagnation is severely impacting the diligent research scholars, who are dedicated to advancing knowledge in our nation.”
The escalating cost of living and inflation have made it increasingly challenging for Non-NET scholars to meet their basic needs. The Non-NET fellowship serves as a critical source of financial support for many research scholars, enabling them to concentrate on their research without worrying about their financial situation.
However, the current level of the Non-NET fellowship falls significantly short of covering living expenses, diverting their attention and energy away from their research objectives.
“Research scholars serve as the foundation of scientific progress in our country, showcasing their unwavering dedication, determination, and commitment to driving research and development initiatives,” AIRSA added. “Their contributions are pivotal in advancing our nation’s development and scientific growth.”
The association also highlighted that in addition to the financial burden, Non-NET scholars encounter various other challenges, including insufficient infrastructure and resources, as well as inadequate support from their supervisors. These factors hinder their ability to complete their research in a timely manner and hinder their full potential.
