India generates 170,338 tonnes of solid waste daily: Govt in Lok Sabha

Waste is anything that people throw away or do not use. Waste can cause pollution and harm the environment. India has a lot of waste that needs to be managed properly. The minister of state for environment, forest and climate change, Ashwini Kumar Choubey, gave some information about India's waste management in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament.

He said that India produces about 1,70,338 tonnes of solid waste every day. This includes things like food, paper, plastic, metal, and so on. Out of this, they treat only 91,512 tonnes. This means that they collect, sort, recycle, or safely dispose of the waste. They dump the rest of the waste in landfills or open spaces, where it can cause problems.

He also said that India has made some new rules for some types of waste. These are plastic packaging waste, battery waste, electronic waste, waste tyre and used oil. These types of waste can be harmful or valuable. The new rules tell the producers of these products to take responsibility for their waste. They must collect, reuse, recycle, or dispose of their waste properly. They also have to use recycled materials in their products. This will help India to use less resources and create less waste.

He also said that India has joined some international groups that work on waste management. Global Alliance for Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency (GACERE) and the International Resource Panel (IRP). These groups want to promote a circular economy.

A circular economy is a way of making and using things that reduces waste and pollution. It also saves resources and money. It does this by reusing, repairing, recycling, and remaking things. India is a part of these groups and wants to learn from them and share its experiences.
