How GPS took life of Dr. Advaith and his friend in Ernakulam?

In a tragic incident, two doctors drowned after their car sank in a river due to a GPS error. The incident occurred in the Gothuruth area of Ernakulam district, Kerala, at around 12:30 am. Dr. Advait and his colleague Dr. Ajmal Asif were returning from a birthday celebration when their GPS led them into a river instead of the correct route.

GPS misdirection leads to tragic drowning

Dr. Advait, who had just turned 29, was celebrating his birthday with four friends. They had gone to Kodungallur from Kochi for birthday shopping and were returning when the incident occurred. As per the GPS instructions, Dr. Advait drove straight into what turned out to be a river. The car began sinking, and although three other occupants managed to escape, Dr. Advait and Dr. Ajmal could not get out of the locked car.

Reports state that the accident occurred around 12.30 am on Saturday. Local residents, who observed the accident, began the rescue operations. They, along with Fire Force personnel, rescued three passengers from the car. The bodies were discovered floating in the river. The police reported that the condition of the injured passengers is stable.

Ashok Ravi, senior manager of Kodungallur Craft Hospital, reported that one of the survivors, Dr Gajik Thabasir, attributed the accident to the GPS giving wrong directions. However, he could not confirm whether it was a technical glitch with the application or human error.

The incident has raised concerns about the reliability of GPS systems during monsoon season. Experts advise drivers to be alert as GPS algorithms guide drivers to roads with less traffic, which may not necessarily be safer.

The survivors of the incident are currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Kochi. The bodies of Dr Advaith and Dr Ajmal were taken to Kalamassery Medical College and Thrissur Medical College respectively for postmortem.
