French tourist died in Fatehpur Sikri because ambulance reached 45 mins late

A 60-year-old French woman fell from a high platform in Fatehpur Sikri on Thursday. Raj Kumar Patel, the Superintending Archaeologist of ASI, Agra Circle, shared details of the incident with PTI. The railing fell when tourists were taking selfies or photos.

Patel explained that tourists trying to take selfies and photos caused the wooden railing to break due to the pressure. He also pointed out that the railing had shown signs of instability for several months before the tragic incident, despite being installed after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The woman, part of a group of around 30 tourists, lost consciousness when she landed on the red stone platform. Although there were no immediate signs of bleeding, it is suspected that she suffered a head injury during the fall.

Reports indicate that there was a delay in providing first aid, and the situation was made worse by the ambulance arriving late.

A local tour guide informed India Today that they had called for an ambulance from Kiraoli town, which is located 15 km away from Fatehpur Sikri. The authorities at the Fatehpur Sikri police station confirmed that it took a lengthy 45 minutes for the ambulance to arrive at the scene.

Deepak Daan, President of the Tourist Guides Welfare Association, Agra, expressed concern over how the incident was handled, stating, "The incident raises questions about the availability of emergency medical facilities because there was no ambulance readily available when the tourist was lying unconscious on the ground. A shabby ambulance arrived, and that too after about an hour."

In response to the incident, Agra District Magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami has initiated a magisterial probe to thoroughly investigate the matter.
