Find out your carbon footprint with this calculator

Do you know how much greenhouse gas emissions you are responsible for? Do you want to find out ways to lower your environmental impact and help fight climate change? If yes, then you might want to check out this online carbon footprint calculator developed by the Indian Land Tenure Foundation and Intertribal Agriculture Council.

A carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are emitted by an individual, a product, a company, or a country due to their activities. It can be expressed in tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year. A high carbon footprint means a high contribution to global warming, which has serious consequences for the planet and its inhabitants.

What is a carbon offset?

A carbon offset is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that compensates for an equivalent amount of emissions that occur elsewhere. For example, suppose you emit one ton of carbon dioxide by flying from New York to London. In that case, you can offset it by paying for a project that prevents or removes one ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, such as planting trees, installing renewable energy, or improving energy efficiency.

Carbon offsets are usually measured in tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), which is a unit that accounts for the global warming potential of different greenhouse gases. Carbon offsets can be verified and certified by independent standards and registries, such as the Verified Carbon Standard, the Gold Standard, or the American Carbon Registry.

Steps to Calculate Your Carbon Footprint

  1. Visit the website or platform offering the carbon offset program.
  2. Enter the mode of transportation you'll be using (in this case, airplane).
  3. Provide the city of departure for your trip.
  4. Enter the city of arrival for your trip.
  5. Input the number of nights you plan to stay at your destination.
  6. Choose an event or organization associated with Native American carbon projects.
  7. Submit the information to calculate your estimated carbon emissions.
  8. Review the results to see your carbon footprint and consider offsetting it by supporting a Native American carbon project.

Travelling can be a rewarding experience, but it can also significantly impact the environment. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, air travel accounted for about 2.8% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2018, and this share is expected to grow in the future. Moreover, travelling by other modes of transport, such as car, bus, or train, also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change.

Fortunately, there is a way to reduce the environmental impact of your travel and support a good cause at the same time. By offsetting your travel emissions with a Native American carbon project, you can help preserve the natural and cultural heritage of indigenous communities while contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change.
