Let’s face it, crime dramas, fiction, and non-fiction have a certain allure about them. And despite our justified and intense hatred for criminals, Americans sure love the depiction of epic tales of crimes on the big screen.

And it’s not just the crime that audiences are interested in, it’s the criminals too. Thousands if not Millions of us are guilty of looking up to and being inspired by mobsters, mafia bosses, con men, and even serial killers.

The astonishing popularity of blockbusters like the God Father trilogy, Gangs of New York, Scar Face and more recently Netflix’s Irishmen is a testament to our society’s secret fetishization of crime.

And it’s not just audiences, film critics of the most rigid categories have showered acclaim, accolades, and even Academy awards on crime drama movies; take for instance the almost hysterical praise garnered by Mystic River and No Country for Old Men.

Watching outlaws bend and break the rules of society stands in sharp contrast to our daily routines. Protagonists in these movies enjoy a freedom that most of them can barely dream of, a life brimming with thrill, adventure, and danger. Maybe we try to find our primal selves in these criminal characters.

But enough about psychology. Because we are sure that even if you were not a fan of crime dramas before, you are one now. And if you are looking to foray into this genre you do not need to hop around the internet looking for lists.

We’ve got everything you need right here. But before we jump onto our stellar list of some of the best crime drama seasons ever produced, we must take a brief pause to talk about something important.

You will never be able to enjoy any of the seasons mentioned on this list if you rely on obsolete DSL technology to stay connected to the internet. Nobody would want Marlon Brando to pause intermittently as he softly threatens his enemies with death and destruction.

So, if you really want to enjoy our list, shift to a better more established internet service provider (ISP) like Spectrum. The provider is reliable, fast, and cheap. Additionally, the quality of Spectrum’s Customer Service will almost shock you. So, don’t wait around, make the shift.

Now that we have beaten about the bush, let’s jump on to our list of crime drama seasons everyone should have watched by 2023.

BREAKING BAD

No list of crime drama seasons can hope to be near extensive without mentioning Breaking Bad. Hundreds if not thousands will confidently tell you that the season is the best crime drama ever produced.

Underpinned by a constantly evolving story arch and pushed forward by compelling performances Breaking Bad has achieved both critical acclaim and mass appeal.

The season revolves around the life of a high school Chemistry teacher who goes into a mid-life crisis after being diagnosed with Cancer. But instead of giving up, he decides to put the remainder of his life to good use by deciding to deploy his chemistry skills to manufacture high-quality drugs.

In short, instead of breaking down, he decides to break bad. What ensues is an epic tale of a mid-aged sub-urban dad successfully trying to circumnavigate the criminal underground.

The immensely popular season is given birth to a movie, around the life of our protagonists’ addict student, and another stellar season, centered around the life of his lawyer.

This naturally brings us to our next entry on the list.

BETTER CALL SAUL

Created as a prequel and sequel to the events that transpire towards the end of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul is perhaps the only season that gives its predecessor a run for its money.

The season is centered around the life of Jimmy, a younger brother who gets a law degree to impress his elder brother who is also a lawyer. Starting out a straight arrow Jimmy soon stumbles into the world of crime and figures out that he has a knack for breaking the law from within its bounds.

The season basically depicts Jimmy’s transformation into Saul, the Cadillac-driving mafia lawyer.

The story is fairly slow-moving and does not offer loads of quick twists and turns, instead, the directors found beauty in focusing on the bland and mundane aspects of life.

Towards the end of the season, audiences cannot help but question the duality of their existence and look deep inside the battle raging between Saul hiding inside our own Jimmy.

TRUE DETECTIVE

Do not let the name confuse you, true Detective is not a traditional cop drama anthology. And though the season is based on the traditional trope of two homicide detectives hoping around rural America trying to solve grizzly murders, this aspect of the show is perhaps its only tryst with traditional storytelling.

True Detective is centered around the life of an ex-DEA task force turned homicide detective who develops an unhealthy obsession with a series of unsolved missing person cases involving women and children.

But beyond all this True Detective is a lesson in philosophy and aims to answer questions about the deepest thoughts that lurk in the deepest corners of our minds.

The dialogues are almost otherworldly and times sound more like a university lecture instead of a screenplay. The season will jolt you into hating life and then make you fall in love with the world all over again.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Owing to the extreme popularity of the genre there is no shortage of crime drama seasons coming out of Hollywood but few have been able to leave a deep mark on the field. The three serials mentioned above belong to this very rare category and are worth watching and re-watching.
