Bajrang Dal workers assault Muslim man for 'dating' Hindu woman in Indore

A 24-year-old Muslim man was allegedly assaulted by Bajrang Dal workers after the victim was caught with a Hindu woman at a city hotel in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district.

The right-wing organization also issued a press release regarding the incident. Bajrang Dal local unit coordinator Tannu Sharma claimed that the man had booked the hotel in the Lasudia area with a 'false identity card'. He then allegedly lured the woman into her bedroom with the "intent of love jihad".

Video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the video, Bajrang Dal members could be seen harassing the man and one of them slapping him. While another man asked his name and told another to call his father and the police.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Vyas said the man had been detained for further investigation.

Right-wing organizations often use the term "love jihad" to claim that Muslim men lured Hindu women with the intention of converting them to Islam through marriage.

On 4 February 2020, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy told the Lok Sabha that the word “Love Jihad” is not defined under the existing laws. Also, he told Parliament that no matter related to this came to the notice of central agencies. Reddy had said that Article 25 of the constitution gives freedom to accept, follow and propagate any religion.

Even though the central government says that “love jihad” is not defined in the law, the BJP leaders, ministers and governments have taken a strong stand against inter-religious love and weddings in the recent past.
