Five people were killed and six others, including a police officer, injured after a shooting at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday morning, according to police.

The Louisville Metropolitan Police said they responded to "an active assailant" in the 300 block of East Main Street in downtown, adding that "there are multiple victims."

The Louisville FBI described the incident as a shooting and other officials urged residents to stay away from the area.

One of those shot was a police officer, according to preliminary information from a source with direct knowledge of the scene on the ground. The source said that there was an exchange of fire between the shooter and the police during the incident.

Police are reporting "multiple casualties" responding to a shooting at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

The Louisville Police Department indicated on Twitter that there is an incident in full swing and asked citizens to move away from the area.

“There are multiple casualties,” police said in their tweet. He added that there is "an active aggressor" in the place.

Numerous police vehicles were seen in television footage. WHAS reporters said they saw people being taken away in ambulances.

In a tweet, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said he was on his way to the scene.

"Please pray for all the families affected and for the city of Louisville," Beshear said.

The FBI said its agents were also responding to the shooting.

The shooting occurred at a building on East Main Street that houses the Old National Bank, not far from Louisville Slugger Field and Waterfront Park.
