Sheep and goat pox (SGP) is a disease that causes substantial loss of production and productivity of sheep and goats. The disease is a major constraint to the introduction of exotic breeds of sheep and goats and to the development of intensive animal husbandry.

Economic losses due to sheep and goat pox result from reduced milk production, damage to hide quality and other production losses. Moreover, the existence of the disease seriously affects trade in animals and products, leading to loss of export earnings.

Generally, PGS is less commonly seen in native breeds in areas where it is endemic compared to exotic breeds. Native animals are more likely to become infected with the disease in areas where it has not been found or dormant for some time and when intensive animal husbandry methods are introduced. The virus that causes sheep pox and goat pox is the sheep and goat pox virus of the family Poxviridae, genus Capripoxvirus, one of the largest (170-260 nm by 300-450 nm), double DNA virus wrapped strands.

Most of the time, the disease is transmitted by direct contact, but indirect contact with an infected object and a mechanical insect can also be transmitted. Nasal aerosols and secretions can also spread pox and goat pox virus. Sheep and goat pox (SGP) is a very devastating viral systemic disease of sheep and goats characterized by a generalized rash, fever, generalized papules or nodules, vesicles (rarely) on non-woolly skin, internal lesions in the lungs.
