According to the NCRB data presented by the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, the number of unemployed people who committed suicide in the year 2020, the beginning of the corona epidemic, reached 3,548, which is the figure highest so far. In the years 2018 and 2019, this figure was 2741 and 2851 respectively.

Due to poverty and debt, 4,970 people committed suicide in 2018. In turn, 5,908 people took their own lives in 2019 and 5,213 in 2020.

According to NCRB data, Karnataka was at the forefront of unemployed suicides in 2020 with 720 people committing suicide. It was followed by Maharashtra (625), Tamil Nadu (336), Assam (234), and Uttar Pradesh (227).

In suicides due to bankruptcy or indebtedness, Maharashtra, which reports the highest number of farmer suicides each year, topped the list in 2020 with 1,341 deaths, followed by Karnataka (1,025), Telangana (947), Andhra Pradesh (782) and Tamil Nadu (524). Barring Tamil Nadu, the other states usually account for the most farmer suicides.

According to NCRB data, suicides among the unemployed has been increasing over the last few years – the toll was 2,851 in 2019; 2,741 in 2018; 2,404 in 2017; 2,298 in 2016; 2,723 in 2015; and 2,207 in 2014. The total number of suicides among the unemployed during the BJP-led government at the Centre (2014-2020) was 18,772, an average of 2,681 deaths per year.

The government pointed to its employment programs, including the rural work scheme for which this year's budget allocated about three-quarters of last year's revised estimate, and several pet schemes such as Make In India that have been around for a long time. years.

Rai said the government had launched a series of programs for employment and income generation through Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana (ABRY), the National Career Service (NCS) project for job seekers and employers for job search. , the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Program (PMEGP), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, Deendayal Antodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission, and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana with substantial disbursements.

“Flagship government programs like Make in India, Digital India, Swachh Bharat Mission, Smart City Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, Housing for All, Infrastructure Development and Industrial Corridors have the potential to generate productive employment opportunities” . he said.

Economists and opposition politicians accused the government of doing little to alleviate unemployment before and during the pandemic, and criticized this year's budget for offering nothing to the jobless and beleaguered farmers.

Rai, in his written response to a question about the number of suicides stemming from "unemployment and financial crisis," told the Rajya Sabha that the suicide data was provided by the National Crime Records Bureau.
