Who is Mohammed Sulaiman the Bengaluru Rameshwaram Cafe Blast Suspect?

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken Minhaj alias Mohammed Sulaiman, a 26-year-old cloth merchant from Ballari, into custody for questioning over the recent bomb blast at Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe. Sulaiman, who was initially arrested on December 18, 2023, is suspected of leading an ISIS module in northern Karnataka’s Ballari region.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara revealed that investigators have found leads suggesting the suspected bomber traveled by bus towards Tumakuru, changed clothes, and then proceeded to Ballari. The NIA has custody of Sulaiman until March 9, following a body warrant issued by the special court.

The blast, which occurred on March 1 at the popular eatery in eastern Bengaluru’s Brookefield area, resulted in injuries to 10 individuals. A 9v battery, a timer, and several nuts and bolts were discovered at the crime scene, indicating the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

In December 2023, the NIA arrested Minhaj and four others from Karnataka on suspicion of plotting Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts. On December 14, 2023, the NIA registered a case against them, suspecting that the group had planned to use explosive materials to craft IEDs for carrying out terror acts.

Fresh CCTV footage has shown the suspect wearing a beige cap, a black backpack, a full-sleeved shirt, dark trousers, shoes, a facemask, and spectacles, moving around in a BMTC bus at 11:43 am, over an hour before the explosion.

The footage captured the suspect boarding the bus at 11:42 am and later glancing at the CCTV camera before exiting. Additionally, an unverified photograph of the suspect without a face mask and wearing a T-shirt has been circulating on social and electronic media.

The NIA’s ongoing investigation follows a series of raids conducted in December, which led to the arrest of Sulaiman and four others for allegedly plotting to carry out IED explosions as part of the “ISIS-inspired Ballari module.” The case details remain under wraps as the investigation continues, with the authorities expressing confidence that the suspect will soon be apprehended.
