Ground Report | New Delhi: Full list of Oscars 2022 nominees: 'Writing With Fire' is the first pan-India independent production to make it to the final nomination in this category. In December, it made it to the Oscars shortlist - out of 15 films from a pool of 138.

Delhi-based filmmakers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh's documentary, 'Writing with Fire' has also won an Oscar nomination. It made it to the last-five list to compete for the 94th Academy Awards in the Best Documentary Feature category.

'Writing With Fire' is probably the first pan-India independent production to make it to the final nomination in this category. In December, it made it to the Oscars shortlist - out of 15 films from a pool of 138.

The Academy Awards ceremony will return to its longtime home at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27, after the venue was moved in the wake of COVID-19 last year.

Ghosh told The Indian Express, “We are extremely happy. This is a huge moment for us and for Indian cinema. This is the first time an Indian documentary has been nominated for an Academy Award, hence creating history. The film is about fearless Dalit women journalists redefining what it means to be powerful, which is the story of the modern Indian woman."

The documentary film, whose journey began six years ago, and which spotlights the newspaper run by Dalit women in Bundelkhand, 'Khabar Lahariya', mapping its transition from print to digital, is making headlines since winning the Special Jury (Impact for Change) and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in January last year. He has won 28 international awards since.

Thomas-Ghosh's film production agency, Black Ticket Films, "is invested in the power of non-fiction storytelling. As filmmakers, Rintu and I have always been interested in amplifying stories of resilience and hope,” Ghosh said earlier.

In the past, "The House that Ananda Built" by Fali Bilimoria in 1969 and "An Encounter with Faces" by KK Kapil and Vidhu Vinod Chopra in 1979 have been nominated for best documentary (short film), and the British filmmaker of Indian-born Asif Kapadia 'Amy' won Best Documentary Feature in 2016.
