How Satyapal Malik’s faith in Modi changed over time?

SatyaPal Malik, the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has made a shocking revelation about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on corruption.

During an interview with ‘The Wire’, Malik stated that the prime minister is not particularly averse to corruption, stating, “I can confidently say that the prime minister does not have a strong aversion to corruption.” This revelation is expected to spark political turmoil within the Modi government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jammu and Kashmir.

During his tenure as governor, Satya Pal Malik was present during the Pulwama terrorist attack in February 2019 and the revocation of Article 370 in August of the same year.

Satyapal Malik has been known to make controversial statements ever since he was transferred from Patna to Srinagar as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. It was during his tenure in Srinagar that Article 370 was repealed and J&K was split into two union territories.

Malik was later appointed Governor of Goa in November 2019. Upon taking office, he made a statement that he still had a Kashmiri "hangover" and quoted a line from the movie Pakeezah. However, this statement can be interpreted in a lighthearted way.

Although Malik has given many statements, he garnered the most media attention during his tenure in Srinagar as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Praised PM Modi for leadership

In the early days of Modi's tenure as Prime Minister, Satyapal Malik was a staunch supporter of the Prime Minister. He praised Modi for his leadership and policies, and he was particularly supportive of the Prime Minister's decision to abrogate Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Malik has also expressed admiration for Modi's personal qualities. In a 2019 interview, he said, "He is a great leader. He has an exceptional ability to communicate with people. He has a vision for India, and he is working hard to make that vision a reality."

However, in recent years, Satyapal Malik's faith in Modi has wavered, and he has become more critical of the Prime Minister's policies and leadership. One issue that has caused Malik to lose faith in Modi is the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Malik statement against Modi Govt

Satyapal Malik made a statement in a speech in March 2020 in Goa, where he revealed that he received a call from the then Chief Secretary one day before the repeal of Article 370. According to Malik, the Chief Secretary had warned him that more than 1000 people could be killed once the state lost its special status.

During his tenure in Kashmir, Malik made another statement in August 2020 which he stated that the terrorists did not dare to enter a radius of 50 kilometres around Srinagar.

Satyapal Malik in 2021 criticized the Modi government's handling of the pandemic, saying that the government did not take the virus seriously enough at first, and that there was a shortage of medical oxygen and hospital beds in the country.

In the same year, Malik criticized Modi's handling of the border dispute with China. When tensions were high between the two countries, Malik said Modi was not doing enough to confront China and protect India's interests.

In March 2022, Malik raised his voice in support of the farmers' protests for the first time. Speaking at a gathering in his hometown of Baghpat, he warned the Modi government against exerting pressure on and insulting farmers to force them to abandon their protest sites.

On April 09 this year, Malik said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no defense against allegations that the Center unfairly favored the crisis-stricken Adani Group. The former governor said that only the head of the conglomerate, Gautam Adani, could damage the reputation of the prime minister.
