Jawaharlal Nehru University is the most well-known and reputed educational institution in the country. Many eminent people of the country have studied from here. Along with education, JNU is considered a leader in political and social discourse. It is astonishing that the command here has never been in the hands of any woman. But this time it has happened. A woman Shantishree Pandit is appointed on the post of Vice Chancellor. She will be the first woman VC of JNU.
Who is Prof. Shantishree Pandit?
Professor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit is a professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the Savitribai Phule Pune University. She has obtained her MPhil and Ph.D. from JNU itself. Santishree started her teaching career in 1988 at Goa University. She joined Pune University in 1993. She is multilingual, having knowledge of Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, English languages.
Let us tell you that for the last several days, a new VC is being sought in JNU. Professor Jagdish Kumar has been made the chairman of UGC, since then this post is lying vacant. This time a woman is selected for this post, it will be the first time in the history of the university that a woman will hold the post. Till now there have been 12 VCs in JNU.
Along with Professor Shantisree, the name of Professor Avinash Kumar Pandey was also in the race. The tenure of JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar ended on 26 January 2021. But later his tenure extended by the Ministry of Education. Applications were invited for this post in October 2020.
Woman Vice Chancellors of India
In the year 1949, Hansa Mehta became Vice-Chancellor of Baroda University. First time in the history of India a woman became Vice-Chancellor of any University.
If we talk about it now, out of 54 central universities of the country, only these 7 universities have female vice-chancellors.
- Najma Akhtar -Jamia Millia Islamia
- Shantishree Pandit- JNU
- Annpurna Nautiyal -Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University
- Neelima Gupta -Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya
- Dr. Malini V Shankar -Indian Maritime University
- Sunaina Singh- Nalanda University
- Sangeeta Srivastava -University of Allahabad
We are seeing that girls are performing better than boys in the field of education, no matter what the exam, girls are doing well in it. In the field of teaching, 50 percent of posts are occupied by women. In such a situation, why are women not coming in the leading role? This is something to think about.
