As the 94th edition of the Academy Awards is set to take place on March 27, 2022, India on Saturday announced its official entries. The jury that came to the decision included Indradeep Dasgupta, who elaborated that Sardar Udham, played by Shoojit Sircar, would not get a chance to appear at the Oscars 2022.

In an interview with The Times of India, Indradeep Dasgupta, who was part of the selection jury for India's Oscar entry, revealed why Sardar Udham didn't make the cut.

Koozhangal

He told TOI, "Sardar Udham is a well-made production with brilliant cinematography that lives up to international standards. But it is a little lengthy and harps on the Jallianwala Bagh incident. It is an honest effort to make a lavish film on an unsung hero of the Indian freedom towards the British. In this era of globalisation, it is not fair to hold on to this hatred. 'Koozhangal', in contrast, is a truly Indian film with a global appeal. It has no agenda attached to it. It is the most honest film among all the contenders."

He mentioned that the Tamil film has no agenda behind it and was the "most honest film" among all the contenders. The film, starring Karuthadaiyan and Chellapandi, revolves around an alcoholic, abusive husband whose wife abandons him and runs away after experiencing agony at his hands. He then takes his younger son and sets out to find her and bring her back.

He did this in front of the world because he wanted to give a message, he wanted it to be an event that reminds people of the revolution, and that the world should never forget India's biggest tragedy. He was calm and waited patiently when he was arrested by the police. He was imprisoned in Brixton Prison.
