In Hyderabad, a Dalit man was lynched for allegedly marrying a Muslim woman against the wishes of her family, Now Justice For Nagaraju is trending on Social media. The thrashing and murder took place on a busy road when the couple, riding a two-wheeler, was chased by the woman's brother and another family member.
The victim, Billapuram Nagaraju 26-year-old from the Mala community, is classified as a Scheduled Caste.
Nagaraju's wife Syed Ashrin Sulthana said that the two were in a relationship for a long time. Nagaraju approached her family with plans to marry Sulthana but was denied. The couple got married in January this year in an Arya Samaj ceremony and started living in Saroornagar, Hyderabad.
"They killed my husband in the middle of the road. Five people attacked. My brother and others. There was no one to help us. I begged everyone. They killed him in front of my eyes," Sulthana said.
"People couldn't do anything so why come? They only saw. It happens in front of their eyes, someone is killed, people can't see? I fell on him so that I could save him. But they took me away They hit him with iron rods and broke his head."
A relative of the youth alleged that since the two belonged to different communities, the girl's family members killed Nagaraju.
The murder took place near the Saroornagar Tehsildar office in Hyderabad at around 9 pm on Wednesday. Nagaraju was stabbed by the bike rider. Police have detained some suspects in the case. All of them belong to the girl's family.
Many people present on the spot made a video of this incident, while some took pictures, which are going viral on social media. These are so gruesome that they cannot be published. Nagaraju and Syed Asreen Sulthana were married on 31 January. They got married at Arya Samaj Mandir in Old Hyderabad.
The police have registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Bharatiya Janata Party workers in the area have taken up the matter and demanded justice for the victim.
The police claimed that they arrested both the accused within 24 hours. While VHP and BJP workers staged a sit-in at the site, Dalit organizations and BJP workers also protested outside Osmania Hospital.
BJP's Telangana President and Karimnagar MP Sanjay Kumar strongly condemned the incident and termed it as a murder in the name of religion.
DCP Sanpreet Singh of Saroornagar said that it should not be seen as a murder in the name of religion. Along with this, the police also assured that whatever help will be given by the government to the victim, every effort will be made to give it soon and get justice through fast track court. "The girl's mental condition is very critical and it will take time for her to recover," the DCP said.
