Mohammed Fazil, the young Muslim man who was brutally murdered in Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada just two days after the assassination of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettar, was laid to rest today.
Thousands of people paid tribute to Fazil at Muhyiddeen Juma Masjid in Mangalapete on Friday, July 29, and held a prayer meeting in Surathkal. Fazil's remains were transferred from the hospital to Mangalpete on Friday morning. After family members and close relatives paid their final respects, the body was transferred to Muhyiddeen Juma Masjid in Mangalapete, where it will be placed on public view.
"A man named Fazil has been attacked in the Surathkal area of Mangalore city. Four people wearing monkey caps came and attacked him outside a shop. Fazil used to perform small contracts. The initial suspicion is that the murder may have been because of a financial problem," Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said.
Police also said that four or five people had attacked Fazil, adding that they were "taking a complaint from an eyewitness who was with the deceased during the incident."
“All wine stores within the commissioner's limits will be closed until July 29. We have asked all Muslim leaders to perform their prayers in their homes, in the interest of law and order in each locality. Justice will be done quickly and fairly. Mangaluru Commissioner of Police (COP) N Shashi Kumar said, according to ANI.
He also said that the motive for Fazil's murder and the identity of the culprits were being investigated, warning people "not to succumb" to rumors spread by "vested interest groups."
"Section 144 has been imposed in Surathkal, Mulky, Panambur and Bajpe. This decision was made after a brutal murder in Surathkal tonight. A case has been registered in Surathkal police station," he added.
According to TV9 Kannada, the deceased has been identified as Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Mangalpete near Surathkal. He was fatally attacked around 8 am Thursday by unidentified men near a store in the area. The motive behind the attack remains unknown. An injured Fazil was taken to a nearby hospital. However, he later died.
The killing comes shortly after the killing of BJP youth wing leader Praveen Kumar Nettar in Bellare on Tuesday night. The gang that chased Fazil, who was talking to an acquaintance, charged at him, chased him, caught him, brutally assaulted him and stabbed him. Investigations are ongoing into the incident, police sources said. Police have collected CCTV footage from the scene showing masked men attacking Fazil outside the store.
