The Indian Express, quoting police sources, said that Arbaaz Aftab Mulla's body was found in a mutilated state, but after the postmortem, it has emerged that it could be a case of murder. Police say that for the last few years, the case is also being investigated from the angle of the young man's love affair with a Hindu girl.

On the other hand, Arbaaz's mother Najeema Sheikh, 46, has said in the police complaint that the girl's father, her brother, and some people of Hindutva outfit are suspected to be involved in her son's murder. Arbaaz, a resident of Azam Nagar in Belgaum, was a civil engineering graduate and worked as a car dealer in Belgaum city.

Railway police

When his body was found on September 28, the Railway Police had initially registered a case of unnatural death but the post-mortem report found injury marks on the head, making it a case of murder.

SP (Railways) Gauri told The Indian Express, “When the victim's mother lodged the complaint, we registered a case under IPC 302 (murder). If the death of the victim from the train is not confirmed, then the matter will be taken forward. Will be transferred to Belgaum district police for investigation."

A senior officer of the Belgaum district police said that they have not been transferred the case officially, but they have gathered information and found some information that indicates that Arbaaz's murder case was his Hindu. The reason for this may be the relationship with the girl.

A police source said, "All the accused have been identified. Now efforts are on to link the links. The love affair was an issue and there were several talks between the two sides regarding this." A police source told the newspaper that they suspect a man from a right-wing extremist organization may also be involved.

Family knew about affairs

Arbaaz Mulla's mother Najeema Shaikh, who is a government school teacher, said that she was aware that her son was in a relationship with a Hindu girl, which was going on for more than two years. “Our family and the girl's family knew about the relationship. We were living in Khanapur (a taluk in Belagavi)… I spoke to the girl's mother to stop her from meeting Arbaaz and I told the same to Arbaaz. However, we were being bullied by his family, so we recently shifted to Belagavi city,” she said.

Najeema lost her husband three years ago. His daughter, an aeronautical engineer, lives in London. Two days before her son went missing, Najeema says that she and Arbaaz met two Hindu activists, one of whom was named 'Maharaj'.

“We were threatened with dire consequences and they asked us to come to Khanapur to resolve the matter,” she said. “On September 26, Arbaaz and I went there and in his presence, Arbaaz deleted all the pictures of his girlfriend on his phone. They even took some money from us. He told me that at least a thousand people were ready to kill Arbaaz and me. I requested him to allow us to lead a peaceful life and we left. Arbaaz removed his old SIM card and got a new one too,” Najeema said.
