The notice to Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Vijay Kumar said, "Such news articles have created fear and anxiety among the people at large and it tarnishes the image and demoralizes the police/security forces working in the area."

The first article the police was referring to was published on June 28, titled "They Destroyed My Family: J&K Police, Wife and Daughter Killed by Terrorists in Pulwama" Jaish-e On June 27, two terrorists of Mohammad barged into his house and opened fire on Special Police Officer Fayaz Ahmed Bhat, his wife and daughter.

Misinterpretation of facts

The notice asked The Wire to explain why action required under the law or a formal complaint should not be filed with the Press Council of India (PCI). This gives the portal a week's time to respond.

The Wire Story

The Wire article said that Malik's mother was taken to the Special Operations Group camp in Tral on June 2 to persuade her son to surrender his rifle.
