Indian cricket team player, Suryakumar Yadav feels like is a veteran of the game. He is the new 360, after AB DeVillers’ retirement. Surya has scored more than 1000 runs in the 2022 T20I, more than anyone else in the calendar year. He has scored 12 fifties and 1 remarkable hundred against England. He is currently the number one T20 batter. As avid cricket watchers, we have seen his performance incredibly for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL, and most recently for Mumbai Indians.
But, there is a catch. He debut in the game, literally last year. On 14 March 2021, he played his first match against England. At the age of 31, he made his cricketing debut at the International level.
KKR played Surya as a finisher. KKR’s captain Gautam Gambhir called him SKY (SuryaKumar Yadav), and that name has continued since. Then, KKR released him in 2018, when Mumbai Indians bought him. Mumbai Indians pushed him as a top-order batsman where he proved his worth.
In various interviews, Surya recalls being disheartened about not being selected in the Indian team, as he has consistently performed at the domestic level, and even in IPL.
The real reason is, there are way too many people to select from.
Like, as one of the commentaries mentioned, ‘He is making up for the time last’, through his excellent display of masterclass batting.
Suryakumar Yadav’s story is of remarkable calbire, which was short of luck. His story is the story of a lot of players at the domestic. In a country where cricket is played, and followed religiously, talent isn’t enough to get into the International side. Although, IPL and other domestic cricket help identify players.
For some players, luck favours late, and sometimes never. Similar was the case of Mumbai batter, Amol Muzumdar. Like, Amol Surya also plays for Mumbai in the domestic cricket.
