Why Bollywood actress and filmmaker Aisha Sultana was tried for treason?

Ground Report | New Delhi: Bollywood actress and filmmaker Aisha Sultana, during a TV talk show, expressed concern over the Corona epidemic in Lakshadweep, saying that the Centre's Modi government was "vicious" against the people of Lakshadweep. Following her statement, a leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party filed a case against her for "treason".

As of last December, there was not a single case of covid in Lakshadweep, but BJP leader Praful Patel, after taking over as administrator there, made some amendments to the Covid protocol, which has resulted in more than 9,000 cases of Covid on the island at present. Cases have surfaced and more than two dozen deaths have been reported.

Aisha Sultana criticized Praful Patel's decisions during a discussion on the situation in Corona on a regional news channel on Thursday, June 10, saying the Center was using "biological weapons" against Lakshadweep.

Aisha Sultana said, “There was not a single case of Covid-19 in Lakshadweep. But now there are 100 cases a day. Has the center installed biological weapons there? I want to make it clear that the central government has installed biological weapons there." She asked during a TV debate why the administrator of Lakshadweep had finally lifted the ban on covid, which has led to such a rapid increase in the number of infections.

BJP workers were outraged over the actor's statement. They protested outside the house of Aisha Sultana, a resident of Lakshadweep. Abdul Qadir, head of the BJP's Lakshmi Deep unit, filed a treason case against her for allegedly tarnishing the "nationalist image" of the central government over the alleged "anti-national" statement.

The actress later wrote on her Facebook page that no one can stop her from telling the truth, "I will continue to fight for my motherland and those who are silent today are in fact betraying the island." Whenever they try to silence me, I will raise my voice and be louder than ever. "

Several organizations and leaders have condemned the treason case against Aisha Sultana. "Aisha Sultana was only trying to draw people's attention to the inhumane measures taken by the Lakshadweep administrator," Sahtia Protaka Sangam, Lakshadweep cultural organization, said in a statement.

Supporting Aisha Sultana, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor said she was being harassed for misusing the word 'treason.

Lakshadweep, one of the most beautiful places in India, is making headlines, especially for political reasons. The island, with a population of about 70,000, has a Muslim population of about 97 percent. In December 2020, for the first time, a political figure, Praful Patel, was made the island's administrator. Earlier, only an officer of the Indian Administrative Service was appointed administrator there.
