Who is Mullah Hasan Akhund?

Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is Mullah Hasan Akhund; Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has announced his government's interim cabinet in Afghanistan after a three-week wait. Zabihullah Mujahid while announcing the cabinet said that Muhammad Hassan Akhund will be the head of state while Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar will be the deputy head of state.

Who is Mullah Hasan Akhund?

Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund currently heads the Taliban's powerful decision-making body - the Rahbari Shura or Leadership Council - which acts like a government cabinet running all group affairs, subject to the approval of the top leader.

Reportedly, the top leader of the insurgent group, Mullah Hebatullah, himself proposed the name of Mullah Hassan to head the government.

According to reports, Mullah Hassan belongs to Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, and was among the founders of the armed movement. He served as the head of the Rahbari Shura for 20 years and remained close to Mullah Hebatullah.

He served as Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister during the previous Taliban government in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.

According to an IANS report, Mullah Hassan is considered one of the most ineffective and unreasonable leaders of the Taliban. He was not given any important position other than a stop gap arrangement for a brief period in the previous Taliban regime. It was he who oversaw the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in March 2001, and is still listed as a terrorist by the United Nations.

Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada says, "Mulla Akhund served for 20 years as head of the Rahbari Shura and earned himself a very good reputation. He is a religious leader rather than a military background and is known for his character and devotion. go."
