Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar; Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar belongs to the Popalzai, a Pashtun tribe living on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border, but has lived mostly in the Taliban-held Afghan province of Kandahar.

Who is Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar

Baradar was one of 33 people present at a 1994 meeting to form the Afghan Tehreek-e-Taliban. In addition to being the governor of Herat Province and the head of the Taliban army, he also wrote a code of conduct for Taliban fighters in the form of a booklet. However, he was mostly known as a warlord commander.

He is said to be from the southern Afghan district of Uruzgan but has lived for many years in the Afghan province of Kandahar, known as the Taliban's stronghold.

After the fall of the Taliban government in 2001, Mullah Baradar was instrumental in formulating a strategy for fighting US, NATO, and Afghan forces. In addition to overseeing Taliban operations in Afghanistan, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar ran the organization's Council of Leaders and the organization's finances.

Rahimullah Yousafzai, an expert on Afghan affairs, said Mullah Omar and Mullah Baradar, former emirs of the Afghan Taliban, taught in the same madrassa and were among the founding leaders of the Taliban, an organization founded in 1994. Has been the governor and head of the Taliban's army.

He was also Governor of Herat

However, when the Taliban government was formed, they did not hold any special position. He was later made governor of Herat. Mullah Baradar is known as a key military commander in the Taliban movement. He has also been the Taliban's army chief. When the Taliban took control of the Afghan province of Bamyan in 1998, Mullah Baradar was the Taliban commander at the time of the attack.

He is also said to have written a code of conduct for Taliban commanders in the form of a pamphlet outlining the treatment of warlords, prisoners, and foreigners, and other methods.

Mullah Baradar was arrested in Karachi in 2010, later he was released after eight years in Pakistani custody. After which his membership in the leadership council, the largest decision-making body of the Taliban, was restored. 

Now Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has been given the leadership of the Taliban's political office in Qatar, as well as Mullah Hebatullah, the emir of the Taliban movement has been appointed deputy for political affairs.
