Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is Kanpur Commissioner Asim; In rapid development, hours after the state assembly elections were announced, Kanpur Police Commissioner Asim Arun applied for VRS joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A highly decorated Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Arun is a 1994 consignment officer and has served in several prestigious assignments.

Before announcing his decision to join the BJP, Asim Arun met in the afternoon with CM from Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath.

In his statement posted on Facebook, Asim Arun stated that he has sought VRS because he wants to serve the nation and the society in a different manner. “I am feeling very honored that respected chief minister Yogi Adityanath Ji has found me suitable for being a member of the BJP,” Asim’s statement read.

Asim says he will make efforts to use his discipline and experience of working in various wings of the police to serve the party and become a supporter of prime minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to bring together people of varied experiences and expertise together. “I will try to follow the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi to stand for the weakest and the poorest in society. Serving as an IPS officer and now this honour has all been possible because of the system of ‘uniformity of opportunity’ that has been possible because of Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” Asim states in his post.

Who is Kanpur Commissioner Asim?

Asim Arun, who became the city's first police commissioner, is originally a resident of Kannauj District of Kanpur Division. Asim Arun is an IPS officer from the 1994 batch.

He was born on October 3, 1970 in Badaun. His father, Shri Ram Arun, was also the state IPS officer. He also held the position of DGP of the state. Asim's mother, Shashi Arun, was a well-known writer.

His father, the late Ram Arun, once led the state police as his DGP and was one of the best-known officers in the world's largest police force. Asim Arun hails from Kannauj and is likely to compete with an entry from the BJP from Kannauj, a city known for its perfumes and Itra.

Asim Arun was head of the 112 and ATS service before assuming the position of first police commissioner of Kanpur. He also served as SP in Garhwal (then under UP), Balrampur, Hathras, Siddharthnagar, Aligarh, Gorakhpur, and Agra. He also took a command training course in the National Security Guard (NSG) and was part of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's close protection team during his tenure as the SP Special Protection Group (SPG).
