Who is cricketer Tanveer Sangha picked up by Australia for their 2023 world cup squad?

Cricket Australia unveils preliminary squad for ICC men's ODI World Cup 2023 in India, featuring a notable surprise: 21-year-old leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, hailing from Jalandhar, India.

Tanveer, a prominent figure in New South Wales, stood out as Australia's top wicket-taker in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. This marks his second international call-up.

Cricket Australia announced that they named an extended 18-man squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, which they will later trim down to 15. The first assignment for the squad will be a five-match series in South Africa in September. The selectors also revealed a new-look T20 squad for three matches in South Africa, which will have a strong Big Bash League (BBL) flavour.

This T20 series will take place before the ODI World Cup 2023 build-up begins. Additionally, the team will rest some big names from the shortest format in preparation for the demanding one-day campaign.

“We enrolled him in the Ingleburn RSL Club to play cricket when he was ten years old. I picked up and dropped Tanveer from our home in Ingleburn to the club and that meant I had to skip some of my taxi rides and work early morning or late at night,” Tanveer added.

Who is Tanveer Sangha?

Born on November 26, 2001, Tanveer Sangha is an Australian cricketer affiliated with Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL). He specializes in right-arm leg spin bowling and bats right-handed. His standout performance came at the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he emerged as Australia's leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets.

Joga migrated to Australia in 1997 for education, eventually settling in the southwestern suburbs of Sydney. Tanveer made his Twenty20 debut on 12 December 2020, representing the Sydney Thunder in the 2020–21 Big Bash League. In January 2021, he earned a spot in Australia's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against New Zealand. His first-class debut arrived on 27 October 2021, when he played for New South Wales in the 2021–22 Sheffield Shield season.

Subsequently, he marked his List A debut on 24 November 2021, featuring for New South Wales in the 2021–22 Marsh One-Day Cup. The Birmingham Phoenix signed him in August 2022 for The Hundred tournament.
