Ground Report | New Delhi: Alka Mittal has been appointed as the interim chairperson of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). She is the first head of India's largest oil and gas producing company.

A statement issued by the Government of India said, “The Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Petroleum to appoint Alka Mittal as Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC. This interim appointment will continue for six months or till the regular appointment from January 1, 2022.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to assign the additional charge of the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), ONGC to Director (HR), ONGC.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said in an order, for a period of six months with effect from January 1, 2022, or till the appointment of a regular incumbent to the post, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.

Who is Alka Mittal

Mittal is a post-graduate in economics and has a Ph.D. She had earlier become the first woman to join the board of ONGC on 27 November 2018.

Mittal broke the proverbial glass ceiling in a Maharatna PSU by becoming the first woman to be on the board of the company on November 27, 2018. She holds a master's degree in economics from MKPPG College, Dehradun, and a doctorate in commerce from Jamia Millia Islamia. LinkedIn Profile.

Now ONGC will have two women directors on its board as the company has selected Promila Jaspal for the post of Director (Finance). Jaspal is currently the Director of Finance at Mangalore Refinery, a subsidiary of ONGC.

Talking about the oil and gas sector, apart from Alka Mittal, Vartika Shukla became the first woman to head an engineering consultancy company, Engineering India Limited on September 1, 2021.
