Ground Report | New Delhi: Who is actor Chetan Kumar; Kannada film actor Chetan Kumar Ahimsa has been arrested for posting objectionable tweets against a High Court judge hearing a hijab case.
“Kannada film actor and activist Chetan Ahimsa has been arrested by Bengaluru City Police. On Tuesday and an FIR was registered under sections 505(2) and 504 of IPC. Based on the tweet, an FIR was registered in Seshadripuram. Police Station,” Central Division Deputy Commissioner of Police MN Anucheth said in a statement.
The tweet in question is a retweet of his own old tweet about Justice Krishna Dixit regarding a rape case. The old tweet of the actor posted on June 27, 2020, said, “This week KA (Karnataka) High Court Justice Krishna Dixit granted (granted) pre-arrest bail to rape-accused Rakesh B claiming ‘it is unbecoming of an Indian woman to sleep after rape; that is not way women react when they are ravished.’ What’s ‘unbecoming’ is 21st c (century) misogyny of this judiciary Dixit fossil.”
As the hijab row hearing is going on, Chetan Kumar’s old tweet wrote, “This is a tweet I wrote nearly two years ago regarding a Karnataka High Court decision. Justice Krishna Dixit made such disturbing comments in a rape case. Now, this same judge is determining whether #hijabs are acceptable or not in govt schools. Does he have the clarity required?”
According to the BBC, an American citizen and Fulbright scholar, Kumar is a staunch Dalit rights activist who has participated in several right-wing protests in Karnataka. Critics say he is often targeted for his activism and social work – the artist is already facing two police complaints about his statements against the Brahmin community.
According to ANI news agency, police in Bangalore city charged Mr Kumar with “with intent to incite a section or community to commit an offence” and of “deliberate insult with intent to cause a breach of the peace”.
Police said the actor would be produced before a judicial magistrate but did not say when.
According to The News Minute, Mr Kumar’s wife Megha said in a live chat on Facebook that the actor had “missed from home”. “Nobody informed us [about his arrest], his phone is off, so are our gunmen [bodyguards],” she alleged.
