When is 6G coming to India?

Ground Report | New Delhi: When is 6G coming to India; Communications and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that India is working on indigenous 6G technology and aims to launch it in late 2023 or early 2024.

Vaishnaw said in a webinar program organised by the Financial Times and The Indian Express, that the required demands regarding technology have been allowed to the scientists and engineers.

He said, "Work on 6G has started. It will be finished by the end of 2024 or 2023. We are moving in that direction. We are building a network in India that will run on telecom software including Indian-made telcos. There will be equipment and that will give its services to India's telecommunication network and which can go to other countries of the world.

Union Minister Vaishnaw said that apart from 6G, preparations are being made to launch indigenous 5G as well. A major software requirement for this technology will be ready by the third quarter of next year.

He said that 5G spectrum can be auctioned by the second quarter of 2022. The minister said that apart from 6G, indigenous 5G is also being launched, with the development of key software for the technology by the third quarter of next year. The auction of the 5G spectrum is also likely to take place in the second quarter of the calendar year 2022, he added.

“A reference has been made to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for auction of 5G spectrum. They have started the counseling process. This process should end somewhere in the February-March time frame in the coming year. Then the auction process will take place in the second quarter of the calendar year 2022."

“The reforms that the government approved in September have been very well received. The industry is now adjusting to those improvements. Much of the stress that was there in the industry has now subsided due to those reforms. Much more needs to be done. We are already working on another set of improvements which should come in 3-4 months.

As part of the reforms announced in September, apart from the 4-year moratorium, the government had also announced changes such as streamlining the auction calendar and removing spectrum usage charges (SUC) from auctions, a long-pending demand of private telecommunications companies.
