When and why pride month celebrated?

Ground Repot | New Delhi: Every year, the month of June becomes the most colorful, with parties around the world, with the union of a specific community and the search for different rights. And we do not say it because it is a month of carnivals with colored paper like in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans or Veracruz. June is not only the arrival of summer and the beginning of the summer holidays, but it is also the  month of Pride  (Pride Month), when the LGBT community around the world gather together and celebrate the freedom and pride of being who they are.

How did it all start?

In the early morning of June 28, 1969, police raided the space of the LGBT bar  "Stonewall Inn" in New York's Greenwich Village and began dragging everyone into the street for illegal arrest. The tension and the situation escalated due to the fact that LGBT people resisted the arrest and everyone, including ordinary passers-by, began to throw bottles and coins at the officers. The LGBT community in New York, which said  "enough" to  all decades of government attacks, erupted in riots that lasted for several days.

The name was coined by Brenda Howard, a bisexual New York activist nicknamed "Mother of Pride" for organizing the first LGBT pride to celebrate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

The uprising catalyzed the emergence of movements that targeted LGBT rights alongside civil rights organizations and women's rights movements. They held protests, met with political leaders, and interrupted public homophobic speeches to hold leaders and those in power to account. A year after the Stonewall uprising passed the country's first march -  LGBT pride parades  -  Prides  (Pride).
