Liftoff of the first Vikram-S rocket started at 11:30 am from Satish Dhawan Space Center, Andhra Pradesh. The launch vehicle has been named after the father of the Indian space program, the late Vikram Sarabhai.

Vikram-S will rise to an altitude of 81 km after its launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Center. The launch vehicle has been named after the father of the Indian space program, the late Vikram Sarabhai.

The Mission titled ‘Prarambh’ (the beginning) would carry three payloads belonging to two domestic customers and one foreign customer.

The 20-foot-tall rocket is one of the world’s first all-composite rockets to have 3D-printed solid boosters for spin stability of the launch vehicle, a Skyroot official said.

The launch of the rocket is expected to demonstrate the flight test of the avionics systems in the Vikram series such as telemetry, tracking, inertial measurement, global positioning system, onboard camera, data acquisition, and power systems.

India’s space regulator IN-SPACe cleared Skyroot’s Vikram-S suborbital vehicle for launch on Wednesday.

“This is a big step for the private space sector in India. Congratulations to Skyroot for becoming the first Indian company authorized to launch a rocket,” said Pawan Goenka, Chairman of India’s National Space Promotion and Authorization Center.

Goenka said the seamless joint efforts of various ISRO centers including Satish Dhawan Space Center, ISRO Command, Tracking and Telemetry Network, Bengaluru, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Skyroot team and IN-SPACe have enabled the rocket Vikram-S to be ready for launch in a short amount of time.

Skyroot Aerospace co-founder Pawan K Chandana said: “After months of sleepless nights and meticulous preparations by our team, we are very excited to announce our first #Prarambh launch mission from the beautiful island of Sriharikota.”
