The debut of "CNN This Morning" fell in Nielsen ratings to "New Day," the show it replaced. CNN announced a revamp of its morning show with Don Lemon stepping out of prime time to become a co-anchor. Lemon joins Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins on the new show which will have a new name, replacing the current "New Day" later this year.
The ratings for “CNN This Morning” with Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins came through, and it got off to a rocky start, trailing not only rivals like “Fox & Friends” and “Morning Joe” but also its predecessor on CNN, "New Day."
On September 15, 2022, it was reported that New Day would be succeeded by a panel-style morning news show, hosted by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow, and Kaitlan Collins. On October 12, it was announced that the show will be titled CNN This Morning and will premiere on November 1.
“CNN This Morning” debuted with an average of 387,000 total viewers but failed to even match the previous average of "New Day," the show it replaced. Co-hosted by John Berman and Brianna Keilar, “New Day” averaged 404,000 viewers in October.
"There is no stronger combination of talent than Don, Poppy and Kaitlan to deliver on our promise of an innovative morning news show," CNN CEO Chris Licht said in a press release.
The statement further reads: “Each of them is exceptionally intelligent, reliable and convincing; together they have a rare and palpable chemistry. Combined with CNN's resources and global newsgathering capabilities, we'll offer a smart, bold and refreshing way to start your day."
Don Lemon’s new show
New Day Now known as " "CNN This Morning" is an American morning television show that aired on CNN and CNN International from 2013 to 2022. The show will have a different format than "New Day" and will be taped on a different set. Current hosts John Berman and Brianna Keilar will continue to host "New Day" until the new show premieres, after which they will transition into new roles within the network, the network said.
Lemon, one of the network's most recognizable faces ended his late-night show “Don Lemon Tonight” to join the new show.
