What is digital rape?

Many people assume that the term "digital rape" is related to the degradation of someone's identity on the digital platform. "Digital rape" is a term that defines rape that is accomplished by penetrating one's sexual organs with fingers or any other object without their consent. Crime is as crucial as any other physical assault.

However, the term literally means forcibly inserting fingers or toes into the other person's private parts without their consent. In the English dictionary, finger, thumb and toe are called "digit" and hence the act was named "digital rape".

Digit in English means where the number is. At the same time, according to the English dictionary, these parts of the body are also addressed with digits. That is, it is a situation of rape in which the finger, thumb or toe has been used on the delicate parts.

In India, the classification of a sexual offense as "digital rape" took place following the brutal 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case, which shocked the nation and led to reforms in the country's criminal law to increase the scope of the perceived crimes. as "rape".

While its perpetrators are now convicted under the ICC's much broader Article 376 (rape), the use of the term "digital rape" and conviction in such cases still remains relatively low in the country.
