Floods kill 20 people in Morocco and Algeria

Rescue efforts are underway in southeastern Morocco following heavy floods, which have resulted in 18 confirmed deaths and several individuals reported missing since September 9, 2024.

The most severely affected province is Tata, recording ten deaths, while other provinces, including Errachidia and Tiznit, also reported fatalities, involving both locals and foreign nationals.

Moroccan authorities are actively working to restore communication and access to flood-impacted regions, urging residents to exercise caution during this unprecedented climatic event affecting local communities.

Material damage is significant, with 56 houses collapsed, eight structures damaged, and 110 road sections affected, highlighting the impact on infrastructure and accessibility in flood-ravaged areas.

In Algeria, the flood events have resulted in the confirmed deaths of five nationals, with authorities describing the situation as “catastrophic” as rescue efforts continue amidst worsening conditions.

Torrential rains exceeded historic averages across affected regions, complicating rescue operations and damaging crucial infrastructure, such as electricity and water supply networks.

Volunteers and local organizations are mobilizing to provide essential supplies, including food, tents, and blankets, to families displaced by the devastating floods across both countries.
