Sudipto Ballav, who was recently seen in Extraction, is known for playing dark characters in South Indian cinema. The actor speaks about his experience of working alongside Chris Hemsworth and his willingness to work in Bollywood masala films.
Q. How was the experience of working with Sam Hargrave in Extraction? Are you open to working in a foreign cinema in the near future as well?
My experience of working with Sam Hargrave has been extremely unique and absolutely different as I have been doing an acting film for quite some time now and I do my own stunts. Doing this film with Sam what I really learned from him is how you maintain your calm and composer while shooting some of the trickest, deadliest, and most elaborate acting scenes in a film of this magnitude. Of course, I am open to doing foreign cinema and when I mean foreign cinema I just don’t mean Hollywood only I am open to doing British film, Australian film, Korean film and of course as always I am open to doing Indian films that’s where I belong to.
Q. Having worked in regional cinema, web series, and a Hollywood project, how do you see your journey as an actor?
My journey in films has been twenty-plus years it’s been extremely rewarding, learning every single day every single film I get to learn something new and that experience which I learn I carry forward to my next film.
Q. Your portrayal in Extraction has been much appreciated as you looked convincing in a dark character. Since you’ve played negative characters previously in Malayalam cinema aren’t you concerned about getting stereotyped?
I think in today’s time the filmmakers globally are extremely evolved and they judge an actor by his or her ability to portray a certain character because every character that an actor portrays is the director's vision for that particular character and particular film. What filmmaker see your ability from the perspective of that character so as long as an actor is ready to get into a film with a blank canvas and is willing to evolve and experiment a different kind of roles I think than the whole thing of stereotype does not exist in today’s time.

Q. Who are your favorite Hollywood filmmakers you would like to collaborate with?
The filmmakers with whom I would like to collaborate with of course Sam Hargrave once again besides that there is Martis Scorsese, Tarantino, Manoj Nayak Shyamalan I can go on and on.
Q. Is there any Indian actor whose body of work has inspired you towards reinventing your craft?
There been quite a few Indian actors whose approached towards reinventing themselves has actually inspired me and helped me to improve and reinvent my craft and to top the list definitely Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal sir, Irrfan Khan, Mr. Prosenjit Chatterjee these are the names.
Q. Would you like to experiment with light-hearted mainstream Bollywood films other than dark characters or action films?
I am completely open to doing mainstream, light-hearted Bollywood typical masala film.
Q. Since Extraction has been well received by the viewers. Do you think due to the present scenario there should be more focus on releasing films on OTT platforms rather than theatrical releases?
Even I thought I belong to the old school thought of a complete theatrical release with a premiere on Thursday night believing in the concept of the first-day first show but we completely have to understand that times are changing and adapting to the current time is what the need of the hour. In this given point of time, OTT is definitely a new medium whether we like it or not it has a huge audience of its own and slowly we too have to be adapted to this new medium it’s is certainly not a medium that you can avoid it is there to stay.
Q. Which Indian filmmakers are on your wish list?
Due respect to all filmmakers but there are few which are there on my mind with whom I would definitely like to work there is Anurag Kashyap, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Nagraj Manjule, Aashiq Abu, Vetrimaaran these are few people on my wishlist.
