Climate change & population growth leads to increased water resource demand causes land subsidence. Global study published in Nature Communications tracks groundwater loss from over-extraction now at the rate of 17 cubes km/year.
The report paints a grim picture of the global water crisis. Currently, around 3.6 billion people worldwide face water scarcity for at least one month each year.
The research, conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and universities in Australia and Saudi Arabia, used climate modeling to investigate these impacts.
